Afternoon workshop: Exercise Management in Eating Disorders

Kate Brown
(Advanced Specialist Physiotherapist, Cambridge and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust)

and Anna Paterson
(Clinical Lead Physiotherapist, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, Wales)

The issue of dysfunctional exercise and energy mismanagement and the role it plays, for example, in body image is a rarely addressed topic in working with eating disorders. It can be an extremely difficult issue to deal with and without expert guidance can leave individuals, families, and health care professionals at a loss regarding appropriate advice in this area. Two physiotherapists who will lead the afternoon workshop have extensive experience in this area and have been significantly involved in the recent UK publication of a comprehensive guideline that can help to navigate the pitfalls of exercise management in eating disorders. Kate and Anna will present a practical programme based on research for adolescents and adults that is designed to help health care workers improve their skills in designing appropriate exercise plans for eating disorders management. This workshop will be of benefit to health care workers, those with lived experience of eating disorders and their families.
